Leadership is a practical, self adapted skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. People express leadership through building relationships in social environments, at school, work, or by volunteering. Servant leadership begins with someone having the mindset to help or serve first.
Why is it important?
After proposing the definition of leadership it is crucial to understand why it is important and why more people in our society should get involved with their community. Servant leadership is a unique way of learning leader skills though service and community work by engaging in activities helping the nation. Attending simple volunteering events at the local beach clean up or donating to a charity, as well as bringing awareness to the global issues, will have a beneficial impact on the surrounding environment.
I have personally learned service leadership through volunteering at multiple organizations, such as, the Saint Petersburg Public Library, where I tutored students of all grade levels for five hours every week. Donating my time and effort made the world of a difference to these children who were struggling in school and couldn't find a mentor to help them out. Participating in service clubs, especially through high school is another way of getting involved in the community. With endless opportunities that are given to me at Saint Petersburg Collegiate High School through National Honor Society (NHS) and Interact, I am able to participate in events that raise awareness to social issues such as saving the bees and butterflies by conducting a Paint Day, where students got a chance to donate to the National Wildlife Association and paint any endangered species on a canvas and hang up the paintings around our school's campus. NHS was also a part of the Orphanage Gift Drive and the Annual Beach Clean-Up.
